Council gives green light to Rollins Road Traffic Calming Project

The City Council gave the green light to a project aimed at reducing speeding in west Columbia at their meeting Monday night.

Members of the Columbia City Council directed staff to start construction on traffic calming devices on Rollins Road between Stadium Boulevard and Sunset Drive.

The city plans to build three different speed tables at Rockcreek Drive, Manor Drive and Ridge Road, as well as a bulb-out with a crosswalk on the west side of Russell Boulevard. Construction will start in 2018.

The speed limit on Rollins Road is 25 miles per hour, but the city says, on average, drivers go about 39 miles per hour. More than 1,350 vehicles travel in the area each day.

Ward 2 city councilman Michael Trapp said a lot of work went into the design. He also said they’ve had a lot of success in the past with traffic calming projects.

“It’s carefully designed, it’s backed by science and it’s backed by a majority of people in the neighborhood by two interested parties meetings,” he said.

All council members voted in favor of the project.
