“We are excited that Jontay will return,” head coach Cuonzo Martin said in a release. “He had a great experience going through the pre-Draft process, got the feedback that he needed to do what is best for him and he will learn from it to improve in all areas of his game. Jontay has the potential to make a big jump from his freshman season and he’ll be a great leader for us on and off the court next year.”

Porter declared for the draft on April 5, but he did not hire an agent. By not hiring an agent, Porter gave himself the option of returning to school – as long as he notified MU before the May 30 deadline.

According to recent mock drafts, Jontay Porter was projected as a late first-round or early second-round pick. He recently participated in the NBA Combine; however, he chose not to scrimmage.

Porter averaged 9.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game during his freshman year. The 6’11” big man shot 36 percent from three-point range. Porter played in all 33 games for MU, averaging 24.5 minutes a contest. He started for the Tigers on seven different occasions.

The SEC named Porter to its All-Conference Freshman team. He was also named the SEC sixth man of the year.

In August of 2017, Porter reclassified in order to play for the Tigers this past season. The 18-year-old wanted to play with with his older brother, Michael Porter Jr. Porter Jr. is expected to be a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, which will be held on June 21 in Brooklyn, New York.

With Jontay returning to the Tigers, Mizzou is now out of scholarships for this upcoming season – if the roster stays as is.
