Family holds vigil, demands justice for man killed in 2017 shooting

The family and friends of Cameron Caruthers are demanding justice against the man who admittedly shot and killed him in one year ago.

On Tuesday, over 30 people gathered outside the Columbia Police Department for a candle light vigil.

Ricky Gurley claims he shot Caruthers in self-defense in the home on Dawn Ridge Rd. Stephen Wyse, Gurley’s attorney, says Gurley pulled the trigger in fear of his life.

Caruthers’ parents and family say posed no harm to anyone prior to being shot with Gurley’s shotgun.

“Cameron was simply trying to retrieve some personal items from a house that were very sentimental to him,” Stacy Baker, Caruthers’ aunt, said at the vigil.

Caruthers’ parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Gurley in January. Gurley has not been charged with homicide in any degree.
