UPDATE: Officer fires weapon in early morning shooting, two taken to hospital

UPDATE 3:00 p.m.: A statement from the Columbia Police Department confirms a suspect and a victim were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening gun shot injuries.

Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday officers were dispatched to the area for reports of gunshots. Upon arrival officers found a crowd of people were “occupying a parking lot in the 1500 block of Tupelo Place,” according to the statement.

As officers approached the area, multiple gunshots were fired and officers engaged a suspect. One officer fired their weapon “towards the suspect,” who was later found with a gunshot wound. A gun was also found in the area where officers located the suspect.

It is not clear if the suspect “was struck by the officer’s gunfire, or the gunfire of another individual in the crowd,” according to the statement.

The 27-year old-suspect and the 31-year-old victim were taken to a local hospital. Officers also said that no arrests have been made yet.

UPDATE 4:34 a.m.: ABC 17 News confirms two people are in the hospital after a shots fired investigation at Tupelo Place.

Deputy Chief John Gordon told our crew on scene he “doesn’t believe there is a threat to the community.”

UPDATE 4:18 a.m.: Columbia Police Deputy Chief John Gordon confirms with ABC 17 News police are investigating shots fired at Tupelo Place, near Larch Court.

Gordon wasn’t able to confirm any other details at this time. He told our crew “there are too many pieces right now.”

Gordon said a news release would be released sometime today.

ORIGINAL: Columbia Police Department currently have the corner of Tupelo Place and Larch Court blocked off for an active investigation.

Several first responders and police responded to the area around 2:30 a.m. for a “medical response.”

ABC 17 News crew see police on scene talking to witnesses in the area. They also have a car in the area they have been searching.
