Homeless shelter in Moberly forced to close down

The Mission of H.O.P.E shelter was forced to close Monday after receiving a letter from attorneys representing the city of Moberly on Saturday. The letter threatened to file criminal charges against the owner for not having the necessary permits or zoning status.

Ross Prevo, the owner of the shelter located at East Logan Street, said he was aware the building needed renovations and additional permits to operate legally, but was surprised by the letter.

“It took me totally by surprise,” Prevo said. Prevo said he spoke with Brian Crane, the Moberly city manager, a week before receiving the letter. Prevo recalled his conversation saying, “He said… we’re supporting what you’re doing, and the next thing we heard was this letter.”

Prevo has applied for rezoning but was hoping the occupants of the shelter could stay until the weather improved.

“We’re still not past all the cold weather,” Prevo said. “I would not want to be sleeping in a tent tonight.”

In order to operate according to city regulations, Prevo will need approval from the Planning & Zoning commission and then the Moberly City Council. A public hearing with the Commission is scheduled for Prevo’s shelter for April 30 at 7 p.m. at Moberly City Hall.
