Greitens attorneys want Hawley to remove himself from investigation into governor’s charity

UPDATE 5 pm: Missouri Attorney General’s Office Press Secretary Mary Compton responded to the letter by saying, “The request for the Attorney General’s recusal from his investigation of The Mission Continues is frivolous. The Attorney General called for the Governor’s resignation because the House Investigative Committee concluded there was credible evidence that the Governor committed egregious sexual misconduct. The Attorney General’s investigation into The Mission Continues does not address those allegations. The fact that the Governor has been credibly accused of engaging in sexual misconduct does not give him or any entity with which he was associated immunity from investigation under the Missouri Merchandizing Practices Act (MMPA).”

ORIGINAL STORY: An attorney for Gov. Eric Greitens is urging Attorney General Josh Hawley to recuse his office from an investigation into a veterans charity founded by the governor.

Attorney Edward Dowd wrote a letter on Monday, which said that there were concerns over Josh Hawley’s comment urging Greitens to resign.

The letter says Hawley’s investigation is “clearly compromised” because he has “predetermined the guilt of his own investigative target.”

ABC 17 previously reported that Hawley’s office is investigating The Mission Continues as it relates to the state’s consumer protection and charitable registration and reporting laws.

Hawley was among many elected officials urging the governor to step down after Greitens was accused of taking an unwanted picture of a partially nude woman and being sexually aggressive towards her.

A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office did not immediately comment.
