Large Columbia police presence on Worley Street after reports of woman with hammer damaging property

Several Columbia police officers were seen in the area of Worley Street and McBaine Avenue Sunday morning after reports that a woman with a hammer was causing damage.

ABC 17 News crews got to the 300 block of Worley Street around 10 a.m. to find at least six police cars and one ambulance.

A sergeant at the scene said a woman had a breakdown and used her car and a hammer to cause damage to another car and other property.

The sergeant said that when they arrived at the scene, the woman locked herself in the house with someone she had been in an intimate relationship with, and police weren’t sure if there were also children inside.

After trying to get the woman to open the front door, police forced their way inside and called for more units to assist as well as an ambulance as a precaution, the sergeant said. He said that once they made it inside the woman was still being uncooperative.

The sergeant said they arrested the woman for misdemeanor charges of property damage. Her name has not yet been released.
