Columbia police encourage burglary prevention as spring break approaches

Columbia police are reminding citizens about burglary prevention as spring break approaches.

Police are asking all residents who plan on traveling to keep all doors and windows safely locked, secure sliding doors, create the illusion that someone is in the house by using timers on lights, and keep the perimeter of homes well lit.

Officers are also asking residents to not let their mail pile up. Police suggest having a trusted neighbor collect mail and newspapers.

Police are also encouraging citizens to keep track of their valuable using a free online system. Residents can record serial numbers and upload images for phones, electronics, and other valuables. Officers said if items are ever stolen, the inventoried information will help police identify property in investigations.

Officers also reminded citizens to report all suspicious activity.
