Judge sentences man for March standoff at central Columbia apartment complex

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Boone County judge has sentenced a man after a standoff at a central Columbia apartment complex in early March.

John W. Calvert, 60, of Columbia reached a plea agreement with the Boone County Prosecutor's Office on Monday. Calvert pleaded guilty to felony charges of drug possession, unlawful possession of a firearm and a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault.

Judge Brouck Jacobs sentenced Calvert to seven years in prison for each felony charge and 120 days in the Boone County Jail for the misdemeanor charge. Calvert was given credit for time served on the misdemeanor charge.

Early in the morning on March 1, police arrested Calvert after he barricaded himself for several hours in Oak Towers off of Garth Avenue.

Calvert fired a gun five times during the standoff, according to court documents. Officers evacuated residents from the building during the incident.

Police said Calvert also had suspected crack and a smoking pipe.

No one was hurt during the standoff.
