Mid-Missouri schools prepare for “National Walk Out Day”

UPDATE 5:45 pm: Jefferson City Public School officials said they will not be dismissing classes for any walkout, protests, or other demonstrations.

Officials said if students do decide to participate in a walkout, the administration will provide them a safe place with adult supervision.

The superintendent for JCPS said, “JCPS does not support, endorse, or encourage a walkout or protest; however we do feel it is important to create a safe environment for our students to exercise their rights to participate or not participate in a national movement.”

ORIGINAL STORY: School districts across Mid-Missouri are preparing for Wednesday’s “National Walk Out Day” event that is expected to happen across the country.

ABC 17 previously reported that Columbia Public Schools officials were developing a plan for the walkout to balance the freedom of speech with student safety.

A spokesperson for the Fulton High School said officials are hosting an alternative event to walking out of the school. It will be called “Hornets Being Heard” and will be completely voluntary. Students will be able to discuss the safety measures and share opinions on how to improve the high school.

Superintendent for Southern Boone, Chris Felmlee said, “I met last week with the High School Student Counsel to discuss their feelings on the issue and define their priorities. To date, High School Administration and I are not aware of any interest by our high school students to participate in the walkout. We even double and tripled check this week and today! If there was an interest, the administration wanted to promote a respectful and inspirational message. The members of the Student Counsel were rather focused on discussing student mental health needs. They have partnered with Steve Hollis, Boone County Health Department, to discuss and promote the “Look Around Campaign.”

The superintendent for Moberly said he expects some students to participate and the district has plans in place.

The superintendent for Boonville said he does not expect any kids participating in the walkout.

North Callaway Superintendent, Bryan Thomsen, said “We have not heard of anyone at North Callaway participating…. If it does occur we would allow students to participate….”
