Autopsy set after Boone County child shooting death

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Grief counselors were at Lange Middle School on Monday, where the 11-year-old killed in a weekend shooting attended classes, his mother says.

Investigators have released few details about a shooting that killed an 11-year-old boy just north of Columbia on Saturday.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly incident on East Prathersville Road. Deputies were sent there for a shots-fired call. Once on scene, they found evidence of gunshots and one victim dead.

The sheriff's office said Monday that they've identified no suspects. An autopsy will be conducted, the sheriff's office says.

Brian Leer with the Boone County Sheriff's Office says, "we believe we have contacted every individual that was either present or witnessed any portion of the events that occurred that afternoon."

A Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman did not say which school the boy attended.

"Columbia Public Schools is aware of the tragedy that occurred over the weekend," CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said in a written statement. "It is absolutely heartbreaking. The loss of a child is devastating for all involved and our thoughts are with the child's family at this time. Counseling and support is available for our students who need it."

Charis Echelmeyer, who asked to be interviewed by ABC 17 news crews, says she is the mother of the 11-year-old boy and she can't believe what happened. Echelmeyer said she and her older son were picking up her younger son when they heard a gunshot inside the residence. She did not see what happened.

Echelmeyer says the 11-year-old was accidentally shot by her 14-year-old son, who was moving a gun.
