Man accused of attacking girlfriend sentenced to 7 years in prison
UPDATE 4 pm: Bergman will serve the 7 years for armed criminal action. He will be eligible for parole after 3 years of his sentence.
According to public court records, the 10 years will be suspended imposition of sentence. Bergman will be placed on five year supervised probation after he has finished his time in prison.
ORIGINAL STORY: A man accused of attacking his girlfriend in 2015 has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
ABC 17 previously reported that a woman told deputies her boyfriend attacked her and she was vomiting up blood. According to court documents, the woman’s face was swollen, covered in dried up blood and had several cuts.
Officers interviewed Brett Bergman, who had a swollen right hand, blood on his hands and on the shorts he was wearing.
Bergman said he remembered having an argument with his girlfriend in the guest bedroom. Deputies saw several items in the guest room were broken, and there was blood and vomit on the bed and flood.
Deputies also found a wooden furniture leg that had blood and hair on it, the same color as the victim’s.
During a hearing on Tuesday, the victim read her impact statement. In the letter she said the assault was not the first time he had abused her, “Brett would tell me how he could kill me and get away with it. Usually he would say it in a joking manner, but that could followed up with a grab around my throat.”
The victim also discussed how her life changed after the assault, “Life immediately following the assault still just seems like a really bad dream I couldn’t wake up from. I was in the most excruciating pain in my life. I started learning humiliating details about the incident, like how law enforcement and the paramedics came into my house to find an unrecognizable version of me in a beaten, bruised, and vulnerable position.”
Bergman was sentenced to 10 years for domestic assault and seven years for armed criminal action. The sentences will be served concurrently.
