Light winter weather causes several drivers to crash Saturday morning

Mid-Missouri drivers were under a winter weather advisory Friday night into Saturday morning because freezing rain and drizzle were expected to create hazardous road conditions.

Columbia Public Works and Missouri Department of Transportation crews said they were out through the night monitoring and treating roads as needed.

Although most roads were treated, several drivers crashed Saturday morning because of icy road conditions, according to first responders.

Two drivers crashed during separate incidents in the 4200 block of Mexico Gravel Road between 7 and 8 a.m, ABC 17 News crews said.

First, one driver crashed into a light pole, causing it to fall into the road, according to dispatch reports. While a Columbia police officer was at the scene, another car crashed just down the road.

The driver of the second crash said it felt like he drove over a sheet of ice before he crashed.

Another motorist crashed on Freedom Drive shortly before 9 a.m., according to dispatch reports. First responders at the scene said a motorcyclist slid on the road, causing them to crash.
