Boone County deputies release warning about scammers impersonating officers

Boone County deputies warned residents on Friday of a scammer impersonating an officer.

Deputies said their department has received numerous calls about an “officer” threatening to arrest residents for failing to appear for jury duty.

The scammer is accused of manipulating Caller ID services and having the number show up as a Boone County Sheriff’s Department number.

Officers said the scammer is asking for pre-paid credit or Green Dot cards in order to pay a fine and resolved the issue.

Deputies said officers will never contact citizens asking them to buy money cards to pay a fine or cancel a warrant.

Officers ask anyone who receives the calls to hang up and contact law enforcement at (573) 442-6131.
