Rep. Hartzler blames Senate for shutdown

The 69 hour government shutdown ended early Monday, but the next potential shutdown comes on Feb. 8, which is the last day funded in the current 3 week continuing resolution.

According to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll, 39 percent of Americans put the blame on Democrats. It’s a neck-and-neck poll as 38 percent blame President Donald Trump.

Missouri Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo., is making the rounds discussing the shutdown and what may happen in February.

The Republican representative says the House is doing its job but rules in the Senate are to blame for the last shutdown. Instead of the current rules of three-fifths majority, Rep, Hartzler says it should be simple “majority rules.”

ABC 17 News asked her if she’s spoken to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about her ideas.

Hartzler said, “I have mentioned it to him. And he, of course, has to do the bidding of his Republican conference and sadly there are several Republican senators who are not supportive of that. They believe that nothing should pass unless it’s done in a bipartisan fashion and certainly that’s the hope that you can get bipartisan support, but ultimately I think that the majority rules.”

Although Republicans referred to it as the “Schumer Shutdown” blaming Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, D-NY, this was the first government shutdown with one party controlling the majority of Congress and the White House.
