Some neighborhood streets still slick amid wind chill advisory

While most of the priority roads in Columbia have been treated, drivers could still run in to slick spots on neighborhood streets.

Columbia Public Works had a 22-person crew treating the roads on Monday.

As of 4:30 p.m., public works officials said they were done treating roads for the day, and said they will address problem areas in neighborhoods during business hours tomorrow. They added that “priority streets are passable to dry/drying.”

“Allow plenty of time for commutes to and from work wherever you need to go. Drive slowly. Drive cautiously well below the speed limit, I would say, on most of the roads,” Barry Dalton, with Columbia Public Works, said.

Columbia, Jefferson City and Fulton schools, among others, have canceled classes on Tuesday.

Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Peter Stiepleman said wind chill was the biggest concern. He said the district decided not to have a late start because the temperature is forecast to be the same at 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., so a late start would not have make a difference.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect through noon Tuesday.
