Columbia police issue warrant for armed and dangerous man connected with Waffle House shooting
Columbia police announced on Wednesday that officers are actively looking for Matthew Callier McMillan, 29, in relation to the double shooting/homicide at Waffle House.
Police said the warrant issued is for murder in the second degree, armed criminal action, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
According to court documents, McMillan and another man got into a verbal argument and McMillan pulled a gun.
The two men struggled for control of the gun. During the struggle, police said it went off and hit the other man in the leg as well as some property within the Waffle House.
An armed security guard got involved to break up the fight and told police that when bystanders started to “encroach,” he felt threatened and shot Anthony Warren. He died later at the hospital.
Police and prosecutors said Warren’s death was a direct result of McMillan committing felony assault.
“If someone attempts or actually does commit a felony, or is fleeing from the scene of a felony that they’ve committed, and someone dies from that, that is felony murder second degree in the state of Missouri,” said Bill Tackett, former Cole County Prosecutor.
Despite never firing the fatal shot, McMillan has been charged with murder.
“If you think about it, it makes sense,” said Tackett. “Otherwise, if you commit felonies and someone dies, you’re not responsible for it.”
Officers said his bond is $1,000,000.
Police said McMillan is considered armed and dangerous. Officers ask anyone who sees McMillan is to call law enforcement immediately.
