Jefferson City church, public works clean up after storm

A Jefferson City church and intersection were damaged after a storm hit Monday night.

The roof was torn off the Second Christian Church annex and traffic lights were knocked out at the intersection of Lafayette and Dunklin streets.

According to Jefferson City Public Works, no one was reported injured from the storm, but the department was working with the church to see if anyone would need assistance.

ABC 17 News spoke with Rev. Vernell Weston immediately following the damage.

“I didn’t think it would be that bad, but it is,” said Weston, surveying the damage.

He said the annex had been updated into an office last summer.

“(We’re) just going to lean on God right now and pray that things will work out so that we can get this back in order,” he said.

The church also had some damage.

“We’re just going to have to check out insurance and things of that nature and see where we’re at with that and see what can be done,” said Weston.

At least one large tree fell at the intersection , knocking out power to the traffic lights.

Utility crews were able to restore power before 10 p.m.
