Columbia City Council to revisit the topic of community members using roll carts

The Columbia City Council is to talk about a proposal Monday night that reconsiders the use of garbage roll carts or if the ban will need to head to voters in August.

Council members are expected to meet at 7 p.m. at Columbia City Hall.

If the bill passes next month, the city would no longer need to hold a special election.

Consideration for the special election to let voters decide on the ban came about after the city council failed to repeal the ban in April. The passing of the bill would repeal an ordinance calling for the special election, and remove any rules in the city code against community members using garbage roll carts. 

On April 18, Ward 5 Council Member Matt Pitzer made a motion to reconsider the ban and three other council members helped him approve the proposal. If the city council is able to repeal the ban, the decision wouldn't need to go to a special election, which could save the city around $140,000.

The Columbia City Council is expected to give the first reading of the proposal at Monday night's meeting. Council members could vote on the measure at their meeting on May 16.
