Section of Jefferson City highway to see speed limit increase

A section of eastbound Highway 50/63 in Jefferson City is set to increase Thursday.

The increase will impact the section between the Jackson Street and Chestnut Street bridges. That section of the highway also includes the Lafayette Street Interchange.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the eastbound speed limit will increase from 40 mph to 55 mph, but it will not increase in the westbound lanes.

The change was made in an effort to improve traffic flow, keep the 55 mph consistent through the entire area and decrease traffic crashes. A traffic study also showed 95 percent of drivers were already speeding above the 40 mph limit posted on that stretch of highway.
