5-year-old seriously injured after police respond to pedestrian crash involving bus

UPDATE 11/14: A spokesperson for University Hospital said the 5-year-old girl’s condition has been upgraded to good.

UPDATE 1:33 p.m.: In a letter written by the Moberly Public School District to parents letting them know about the incident, the district said that the safety of students is the school’s first concern and the transportation department has a very safe driving record and the crash was an isolated incident.

The letter said the injuries of the girl were significant but not life-threatening.

District officials also said all the other students on the scene were cleared by medical personnel and were allowed to board another bus. The letter said the school counselor and school staff checked on the students and would continue to monitor them throughout the day.

UPDATE 1:10 p.m.: According to the traffic crash report, the 5-year-old girl was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers said the crash happened when the girl failed to yield to the school bus while attempting to cross the roadway.

Bystanders who heard the crash said the girl’s leg looked severely damaged and it looked like she lost a lot of blood.

ORIGINAL: Moberly police responded the 300 block of E. Burkhart Street on Monday morning for a pedestrian accident involving a bus and a 5-year-old child.

Police said the child sustained injuries and was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Due to the injuries of the child, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Highway Accident Reconstruction Team took over the investigation.

Police said they will continue to assist in the investigation.
