Jefferson City man convicted of murder files motion for new trial

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The suspect found guilty by a jury last month in the death of a corrections officer is asking for a new trial.

In a motion filed this week, Jahuan Whirley is asking for a new trial due to the exclusion of evidence his lawyers believe proves he is innocent.

The motion states that the evidence excluded by the trial court show his twin brother was responsible for the fatal shooting. His twin brother is already serving jail time for a separate shooting in 2020.

Whirley is scheduled to be sentenced on June 14.

A jury convicted Whirley on eight felony counts including second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree attempted robbery and armed criminal action.

A victim told the jury is he begging them for the maximum life sentence to ensure Whirley can't do this to another family because his family has been changed for forever.
