Mizzou basketball cruises past Iowa State, Porter Jr. leaves game
COLUMBIA – The long awaiting start to the Mizzou basketball season ended in victory as the Tigers defeated Iowa State 74-59.
The Tigers are 1-0 (0-0 SEC) beating a Cyclone team that made the NCAA tournament last season.
ABC 17 Sports Director Andrew Kauffman caught up with the players after the game.
Kevin Puryear led the Tigers with 17 points while Jeremiah Tilmon had 14 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Porter Jr. came out of the game just two minutes in. He put his warm up gear back on and had an ice pack on his left hip and back area. Porter’s first basket game just 1:39 into the game, but it remained his only two points.
His brother, Jontay Porter, scored his first points off a corner three four minutes in to give the Tigers a 7-2 advantage.
With Mizzou up 9-4 with under 15 minutes left in the first half, Blake Harris found Jordan Barnett for a two-handed slam giving the Tigers a seven-point lead.
The Tigers led Iowa State 39-25 at half time as Mizzou shot 52 percent from the field to just 31 percent by the Cyclones.
The Tigers outscored Iowa State 35-34 in the second half and cruised to victory.
Mizzou next plays Wagner Monday Nov. 13 against Wagner at 8 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
