Sedalia police report 70 car thefts in the last 30 days

Sedalia police announced on Wednesday officers have responded to 70 car thefts throughout the city in the last 30 days.

Police said various items have been stolen, including firearms.

Officers have asked the community to try to prevent the crimes by always locking their cars. Locked vehicles are less likely victims because breaking into them causes noise and generally draws attention, police said.

Police ask the community to call officers if they see something. Officers advise if citizens wake up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, look out on the street and see if they notice anyone walking down the road, looking into vehicles, or trying door handles.

Officers have asked the community to not leave valuables in their vehicles because thieves are looking for easy targets that will get them quick returns by selling, pawning, or using the items.

Police also ask for gun owners to be responsible and take guns out of their cars at night.
