Auditor Galloway gives Cooper County rating of ‘fair’ due to lack of oversight

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has given Cooper County a ‘fair’ rating in a newly released audit.

The report recommends improved accounting procedures in the county collector’s office and increased oversight in the review of property tax transactions.

“By having proper controls in place, county officials are able to quickly identify and address any potential concern of questionable spending,” Auditor Galloway said. “I urge the county to address these concerns to promote accountability and ensure taxpayer dollars are protected.”

The report states that Cooper County failed to adequately document the reasons for transfers from two restricted funds, improperly transferred money from one restricted fund, has weak computer password procedures and that the public administrator does not store backup data in an off-site location.
