UPDATE: 9-year-old and 2 others seriously injured after four-vehicle crash on I-70
Traffic was moving slowly, or at a standstill, Friday night on I-70 eastbound near mile marker 127 when a freightliner crashed into a car and created a four-vehicle collision, Columbia police said.
Police said that after the freightliner struck the car around 8:40 p.m., a car struck another vehicle.
The second car drove off the highway, crashing into a ditch, police said.
Police said the freightliner continued east on I-70 and crashed into a semitrailer. Both vehicles stopped and blocked both lanes of traffic.
Police said the freightliner driver, Gary Mims, 46, of Kansas City, suffered minor injuries.
Five people were inside the second car, three of whom suffered serious injuries, including a 9-year-old girl. One suffered minor injuries, police said.
Police said the two other drivers involved did not suffer any injuries.
Columbia firefighters told ABC 17 News that one person was extricated from one of the vehicles.
Firefighters also said about 30 gallons of fuel were spilled and a hazmat crew was called to help clean the fuel spill.
