Student falls through deck on fraternity property; deck in danger of collapsing

A student is hospitalized after falling through a deck on fraternity property Saturday evening.

The Columbia Fire Department confirms, that it was notified by Boone County Joint Communications on Saturday that the student was taken to a hospital following the incident.

The Fire Department told ABC 17 News followed up at the house on 916 South Providence Road. The department said the stand-alone deck appeared to be in poor condition.

The city’s building and site development manager told ABC 17 News on Monday that a building inspector went out to home, where Pi Kappa Alpha currently is, to inspect the deck. The inspector found it to be a nuisance and in danger of collapsing. The inspector gave the property owners three options to either repair, replace or demolish the deck.

If the property owner decides to repair or replace it, they have 30 days to do so; if they decide to demolish it they have 60 days.

The city told ABC 17 News that at this point, it is trying to make sure no one else uses the deck.

A representative from the city’s neighborhood services told ABC 17 News the house passed rental inspection in May.

In order to have a deck on the property in the future, the city said the Greek organization must provide a plan to the city to show that an incident similar to the one that happened over the weekend won’t happen again.

ABC 17 News sent an email to the chapter president, asking what the organization plans to do. We haven’t heard back.
