Organizers set to make 500 laps around state capitol for human trafficking awareness

This Sunday, one woman is organizing an event in Jefferson City to shed light on human trafficking in Missouri.

Diamonds March is set to start at 2 p.m. on Sunday with organizers planning to make 500 laps around the state capitol.

All proceeds raised will go to The Central Missouri Stop Human Trafficking Coalition.

After witnessing the crime firsthand, event organizer Laura Thomason said everyone needs to be more aware, including the victims.

“The sad thing is that you could help a lot more of them if they knew they were victims,” said Thomason on Thursday.

“Regardless if these girls are out here and they’re on drugs or if they have problems, they don’t need to be more victimized,” she said. “They don’t need to be put out there and they don’t need to be beaten, raped and sent to Chicago or St. Louis streets and put out on the streets. They’re not property, they’re people.”

Thomason said anyone is welcome to attend the event. Attendees will begin across the street from the state capitol at the St. Peters Selinger Center on Broadway at 2 p.m.
