Tracking a warm and windy Sunday, storms tonight

THIS AFTERNOON: Mostly sunny and breezy with highs in the upper 70s to around 80. Winds gusting to 35 mph.

TONIGHT: Breezy with increasing clouds and a chance of showers and storms ahead of a cold front. A few storms could become strong to severe south of I-70.

EXTENDED: We're warming up as a warm front lifts north across Mid-Missouri this afternoon, bringing strong south wind gusts and temperatures into the upper 70s. The associated cold front moves in from the west tonight, bringing the chance for showers and storms as the boundary collides with warm and marginally unstable air. A few storms south of I-70 could be on the stronger side, bringing 40-50 mph winds and large hail up to an inch in diameter. The severe weather threat will be low, but will generally take place between 8:00 p.m. and midnight. Showers and a few rumbles of thunder will be possible overnight with rain lingering into Monday. Highs on Monday will be cooler as temperatures drop into the low 60s behind the front as rain clears out by afternoon. We'll warm back up with upper level winds pulling in southwest flow to the region for the middle of the week, setting us up for another round of strong storms Tuesday night into Wednesday. We'll reach the upper 70s once again with instability increasing quite a bit across Mid-Missouri. The risk for severe weather increases Tuesday night, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two on the table. Strong storms exit east by Wednesday afternoon, leaving us with cooler air in the upper 50s to low 60s to end the week. Rain amounts will range from about 1-1.5".
