Weather Alert Day: Tracking a few strong storms tonight

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for the threat of severe storms tonight. Large hail and isolated damaging winds will be the main threats.

A low pressure system to our northwest is pulling a warm front through the region today, bringing warmer air and gusty winds to Mid-Missouri, along with marginal instability for storms to work with into this evening. Temperatures reach the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

A cold front working in from the west tonight will trigger isolated to scattered strong storms, likely after sunset. There will be enough instability for storms to sustain for at least a few hours after developing. The timeline for severe storms would be between about 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

All modes of severe weather are possible with storms that develop tonight, but the primary concern will be hail greater than 1" in diameter. 40-60 mph are possible in a few storms, but the tornado threat will be low.

Make sure you have a way to receive alerts tonight. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather App is a great resource that can be programmed to show alerts for your exact location. Learn how to set up alerts on your phone here.
