Jefferson City man suspected of tampering with evidence, picking up shell casings after shooting

Rafael Hickmon was charged with tampering with physical evidence after Jefferson City police found evidence of a shooting on Saturday.

According to the probable cause statement, Jefferson City police received a phone call from Capitol Region Medical Center in reference to an individual with a gunshot wound.

Police said when they tried to talk with the individual at the hospital, they were uncooperative with law enforcement.

Officers said they located the scene of of the shooting in the 200 block of East Franklin Street, and located four spent casings.

While on scene, officers said they discovered a local business that had exterior placed cameras.

Officers said they contacted the business and obtained the video of the shooting. While viewing the video, officers observed the shooting occur and the suspect vehicle, minutes later, Hickmon and another man were seen walking up to the scene and picking up spent shell casings in the street.

On Wednesday, officers said they located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Hickmon was inside the vehicle at the time, officers said.

Officers said they arrested Hickmon and asked him about the shooting, Hickmon denied being present during the shooting but admitted to being in the area later in the evening.

According to the probable cause statement, Hickmon has an extensive criminal history with multiple felony convictions.

Hickmon was charged with tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution.
