Attorney General Josh Hawley investigates Equifax

On Tuesday, Attorney General Josh Hawley announced that his office and other state attorney generals were investigating Equifax.

Hawley said the investigation began shortly following Equifax’s disclosure of the breach of consumer files earlier this summer.

“My office is working aggressively to protect the interests of Missourians in light of the recent Equifax breach,” Hawley said.

Hawley and other state attorney generals told the company to stop using its own data breach as an opportunity to sell services to breach victims.

Hawley said Equifax’s actions were going to confuse customers who are already struggling to make decisions on how to best protect themselves after the breach. He also called the company’s actions were unfair.

Hawley has requested information about the circumstances that led to the breach and the reasons for the long delay on the disclosure.
