Amazon contacting, refunding customers who bought potentially phony eclipse glasses

Amazon is warning customers not to use some potentially counterfeit solar glass purchased through the online retailer with just one week left until the total solar eclipse.

The company says it has contacted and issued refunds to some customers who bought the glasses.

Amazon says the glass quote “may not comply with industry standards.”

ABC 17 News has been telling your for months you need special eclipse-viewing glasses to protect yourself from permanent eye damage including blindness.

The enormous demand for these glasses has apparently led to reports of inadequate knock offs.

Amazon has also removed a few listings for glasses on its website “out of an abundance of caution.” It did not name any of those listings in its statement.

The American Astronomical Society said last week that it updated its safety advice “in response to alarming reports” of unsafe glasses selling online.

It says buyers should be skeptical of glasses even if they’re stamped with an ISO seal, which has been used in the past to indicate which glasses comply with standards set by the International Organization for Standardization.

In response, the AAS posted a list of verified vendors and websites where verified eclipse glasses are sold.
