CHARLESTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Department of Transportation Tweeted Friday morning that all lanes of Interstate 57 have been reopened, following a pileup involving 47 cars, killing six people.

MoDOT encouraged drivers to continue to use caution while driving in the area.

Emergency crews responded to the pileup Thursday morning that spanned about a half-mile of the interstate from Interstate 55 to the Illinois state line, according to officials.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, however, officials believe foggy conditions may have played a role.

Officials added they do not expect the death toll to rise, stating the recovery stage has concluded.

The crashes happened near the city of Charleston, near the state's border with Missouri along the Mississippi River.
