Missouri Secretary of State warns investors against scams relating to war in Ukraine

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is warning Missourians to be aware of possible scams relating to the war in Ukraine.

Investors and security firms should monitor for possible cyber attacks and scams, according to a press release from Ashcroft's Office.

“We encourage all Missourians to take steps necessary to safeguard from fraud,” said Ashcroft. “Always check out anyone who solicits you for investment. Ask questions and get answers before you hand over your money.”

Ashcroft also added guidance from The Missouri Securities Division and North American Securities Administrators Association on how to avoid potential scams, including being skeptical of investment opportunities.

Investors are encouraged to delete any emails or contacts touting investment opportunities with little to no risk with significant or guaranteed returns.

The Missouri Securities Division advised investors should do their homework before investing, being cautious with the person or firm offering the investment.

Additionally, investors should monitor accounts regularly as well as take steps to protect financial data.

Ashcroft urges Missourians to file complaints relating to any potential scams.

At the same time, the Better Business Bureau is reminding residents to do research and be safe while donating to charities in Ukraine.

The BBB advises residents to rely on experts to evaluate a charity as opposed to third-party recommendations. Those looking to donate should also be wary of crowdfunding websites as it can be difficult to verify if the organization or individual is trustworthy.
