Settlement reached in Bustamante civil case

A Cole County judge approved a settlement in the civil case between convicted murderer Alyssa Bustamante and her victim’s mother Patricia Preiss.

The 23-year-old now must pay Preiss $5 million in the wake of the 2009 murder of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten.

According to the settlement, the amount collected each year is limited to $25,000 with an interest rate of 9 percent.

Bustamante pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the October 2009 killing of Elizabeth Olten in St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. Bustamante was 15 at the time.

Bustamante requested the court toss out her 2012 guilty plea after being sentenced to life in prison, but the appeals court upheld the sentence.
