July Show-Me State Games kick off in mid-Missouri heat

Despite the heat, several thousand people are expected in mid-Missouri for the July Show-Me State Games.

The games kick off Friday and feature more than 40 different sports and special events.

University of Missouri Health Care will be on hand providing emergency care during the event and is encouraging attendees to take precautions to avoid dehydration and heat stroke.

If you or someone you know plan to attend, MU Health Care encourages you to follow drink plenty of fluids like water, especially if you are sweating. Sports drinks can help maintain your electrolyte balance while drinks like Pedialyte can help youngsters and infants out in the heat.

To avoid heat stroke, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and avoid caffeinated drinks.

Cover up with sunscreen, sunglasses or even a hat.

You can get your body used to the hot weather by increasing the time you spend outdoors gradually.

Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m. on Friday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
