Governor’s action will create adult high school in mid-Missouri
Governor Eric Greitens held a ceremony in Kansas City to sign House Bill 93 and several other measures into on law Wednesday morning.
HB 93 was sponsored by Rep. Jeanie Lauer (R – Blue Springs). It was similar to Rep. Travis Fitzwater’s (R – Holts Summit) House Bill 680. HB 680 was passed through the House, but failed to make it through the Senate, which resulted in Rep. Lauer’s bill being attached.
With the governor’s action, the bill will create four adult high schools in the state. The schools will be located in southeast Missouri, Kansas City, St. Louis, mid-Missouri, and southwest Missouri.
Right now, it’s unknown which city in mid-Missouri will receive a school.
Rep. Fitzwater hopes the schools will help over 500,000 Missourians over the age of 21 without a high school diploma get their diploma.
“Possessing a high school diploma can be quite important in giving Missourians an opportunity to obtain employment,” said Rep. Fitzwater.
The schools will give prioritize people who are on government assistance. Additionally, each facility will help students by providing child care.
The schools will also offer skills certifications based on regional demand through partnerships with community colleges and other programs.
“I look forward to the next step of getting this project going and the new opportunities it will bring to folks and the state as a whole.”
