Columbia man charged with two felonies in weekend shooting
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Prosecutors have charged a Columbia man with two felonies in connection with a weekend shooting.
Tyler J. Matthews, 21, was charged Monday with first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
Police arrested Matthews on Saturday after being called to the 100 block of Poplar Hill Drive at about 2 p.m., according to a Columbia Police Department news release. Police found a man with a rifle at the crime scene, CPD said. Matthews put the rifle down when police ordered him to do so but resisted arrest, police said.
Officers found an injured man who was taken to a hospital and was stable, the release says. Police released no other information about the incident.
According to court documents, police talked with the victim and reviewed video footage of the event. The victim said that Matthews was calling the victim's dog over to him and the victim told Matthews to stop. That is when Matthews got his rifle and began firing at the victim, causing the victim's injuries.
In a post-Miranda statement, Matthews told police that the victim was messing with Matthews' energy and harassing him by shining lights into his window, leaving his loud truck running and "training his dog to bark at him."
Matthews was set to appear in court Monday afternoon. He does not have a lawyer, according to online court records.
