Prosecutors charge man accused of barricading himself inside of Oak Towers
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Boone County Prosecutor's Office has charged a man who reportedly barricaded himself inside of a central Columbia apartment complex.
John Calvert, 60, of Boonville, was charged Tuesday with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, possession of a controlled substance and illegal gun possession.
Calvert was arrested Tuesday morning after police officers responded to Oak Towers in the 700 block of Garth Avenue, according to court documents. Police said Calvert came out of an apartment on the seventh floor with a pipe and suspected crack cocaine, documents say.
Police said Tuesday that they took Calvert for medical treatment before arresting him.
Calvert is accused of going back inside of the apartment and closing the door. Police said he shot a gun five times while officers were outside of his unit.
No one was hurt.
Security cameras captured Calvert arriving at Oak Towers shortly before 2:35 a.m. with a black handgun, according to court documents. Police said the gun matched the weapon found inside the apartment.
Calvert is a felon, which makes it illegal for him to have a gun, according to court documents.
Calvert was in the Boone County Jail on Wednesday morning. The prosecutor's office has requested bond be set at $150,000. No hearings had been set in his case and online court records did not list a lawyer for Calvert.
