COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Over the next couple of weeks, Interstate 70 drivers will experience lane closures and delays as construction continues on the new Missouri River Bridge near Rocheport and on the replacement of the Sorrels Overpass Road Bridge.

Officials report that crews working on the Rocheport Bridge will be blasting north of Interstate 70 and east of the river as part of preparations for the new bridge to be constructed. In coordination with Missouri State Highway Patrol, crews close the interstate for 15-minute while blasting takes place for driver safety.

“Safety continues to be our top priority as we work on the new bridges,” said Rocheport Project Director Brandi Baldwin in a release. “The blasting is taking place several hundred feet from Interstate 70. We want to make sure that the road is all clear, and that no rock has made it to the roadway.

These closures will take place over the next several weeks between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Similar closures will also be required in the coming weeks as part of construction on the new Sorrels Overpass Road Bridge west of Columbia. The bridge was originally closed and demolished last fall. Crews will be installing girders over the coming weeks.

Crews will close I-70 at Sorrels Overpass for up to 15 minutes during overnight hours to limit traffic impacts.
