Columbia Water & Light set to start fire hydrant flow tests

Columbia Water & Light will start flow tests on fire hydrants across the city on Tuesday.

The tests are expected to last through at least August. Engineers are testing the hydrants to make sure there is enough flow and pressure to fight fires.

Some Water & Light customers may notice low water pressure while crews flush nearby hydrants.

The tests could also free up sediment in the pipes which could temporarily discolor the water. Customers shouldn’t do their laundry if they have discolored water.

According to Water & Light, the water will return to its normal color after it flows for a few minutes.

The water will remain safe to drink.

Customers with commercial fire alarm systems could also be affected by the low water pressure.

If a customer experiences a problem with their water, Columbia Water & Light can be reached at 573-874-6629 or 573-875-2555 after hours.
