11 weeks until Eclipse 2017

In 11 weeks, Eclipse 2017 will cast Mid-Missouri into darkness for around 2 1/2 minutes shortly after 1:10 P.M.

As ABC 17 News continues our weekly look this rare event, we know NASA will be studying the sun’s relationship with the earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the face of the sun, At least from our perspective here on Earth. The sun’s diameter is actually 400 times larger than the moon’s but since the sun is also 400 times father away they appear to be the same size.

NASA says during that time scientists will be able to study the sun’s relatively faint outer atmosphere, which is called the corona.

While the super-bright face of the sun is blocked, scientists will be able to see the corona in ways they simply cannot otherwise.

According to NASA, the corona will appear as pearly white rays and streams around the disc of the moon.

NASA says it will be able to get unusually clear images of the corona, from which it will be able to better understand the earth-sun relationship and space weather.
