Callaway’s new K-9 begins training

Last month, the Boone County Commission passed an agenda allowing Boone County’s K-9 trainer to help Callaway County start a new K-9 unit.

Recently, Boone County also got a new dog.

The trainer allowed our crews to watch the two dogs train.

The 8 week course was to train the dogs mostly about drug sniffing.

Deputies made makeshift rooms and would have the dogs find the smell of a certain drug.

Once the dog would find it, the handler would play with the dog to let them know they did a good job.

These dogs can be pricey, both Callaway and Boone spent more than 7 thousand on purchasing the animals.

But trainer, Chris Smith, says a K-9 unit is a great investment, “A police dog is a super tool for law enforcement. There is no technology out there that rivals what a trained police dog can do in finding drugs, bombs, or people.”

Smith says so far the dogs are doing great and he can not wait to see where they will go.

Currently, the dogs are on week three of training.
