Two hospitalized after crash on Highway 124 in Boone County

Two people were hospitalized after a crash on Highway 124 in Boone County Thursday.

It happened near Route YY, about 20 minutes north of Columbia.

Emergency responders on scene said they received the call around 6:15 p.m. for the two-vehicle head-on crash.

“It did occur on a curve where they have done some fresh oil and gravel so that could have played a part, the road conditions,” said Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone Country Fire Department while he was on scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol later released a crash report confirming the collision happened when a vehicle driven by Caleb Johnson, 18, of Prairie Home, “was traveling too fast for conditions and struck a patch of sand in the roadway.” Johnson then lost control and struck a vehicle driven by Patricia Cahill, 60, of Harrisburg.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital. Johnson had moderate injuries. Cahill had minor injuries.

The road was closed while crews worked the scene and reopened before 7: 45p.m.
