A new study finds the University of Missouri System has a $6.5-billion dollar economic impact on the state.

In a release, System President Mun Choi said, “Each of our four universities in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla and St. Louis have provided teaching, research, outreach and economic development excellence to Missourians for more than two centuries,”

According to the release, the consulting firm Tripp Umbach also found the UM system provides:

  • $1.5 billion dollar economic impact generated by the UM System research enterprise
  • $2.4 billion dollar generated in economic impact by UM System academic medicine
  • $376.8 million dollar generated in economic impact by athletics at the four UM universities
  • More than 69,000 direct and indirect jobs, both full-time and part-time

“For every state dollar invested in the University of Missouri System, Missouri taxpayers saw $15.49 in economic benefits in 2021,” said Darryl Chatman, chair of UM Board of Curators.

The study shows that one in 29 Missouri workers is a graduate of one of the four universities, and each enhances the economic strength of the state, according to the release.
