Flooding along rivers possible after recent rain

The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued a flood warning for the Missouri River as a result of the rain that’s fallen within the past 24 hours.

This warning goes into effect Friday and will last through Monday morning for parts of Mid-Missouri.

ABC 17 News spoke with Boone County Public Works, which said it’s on standby to close roads if needed.

Greg Edington, director of Boone County Public Works, said they have trucks with signs ready to be put up.

Edington said the department is eyeing water levels at some of the more traditional flood- prone areas like Cooper’s Landing.

“We have a good idea on what areas flood all the time, so we tend to look there first,” Edington said. “We have crews that will go out and check areas like that in times of warning.”

ABC 17 News spoke with some residents who said they aren’t worried and aren’t doing anything extra to prepare.

Boone County Public Works wants to remind drivers it’s hard to tell how deep the water can be from your car, so don’t take the chance and drive through it. As a reminder, it only takes 12 inches of fast-moving water to carry a small car away.
