Mother involved in child abduction, deadly crash arrested

The mother involved in a Columbia custody battle that ended in a deadly crash was arrested Friday morning.

Demetres Washington is charged with second-degree murder and three counts of kidnapping. She is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond in the Boone County Jail.

Washington and her friend, Mackenzie Quiovers, allegedly lured three of Washington’s children from their home in early March and crashed a car at Route J and I-70 with the three children inside.

Washington’s 13-year-old daughter, Shianna Mays, died from injuries she suffered during the crash, and her two other children, Adrianna and Tyler Mays, were hurt but are recovering.

Quiovers is scheduled to have a case review at 1:30 p.m. Friday, but is currently not in custody.

The children’s father, Demetrius Mays, told ABC 17 News that Quiovers should have been caught by now.

“She should have been arrested just like they (police) were there when my kids’ mom was released,” Mays said. “There is no reason she should be on the loose.”
