Sturgeon leaders hold removal hearing for police chief

The Sturgeon Board of Aldermen has yet to release the result after a removal hearing for Police Chief Greg Halderman Monday.

The closed hearing after the board’s regular meeting lasted for about three and a half hours.

“I think that we put forth the best possible case that we could for Mr. Halderman, and we’re hopeful the council will find in our favor,” Halderman’s attorney Ryan McDaniels said.

The aldermen and city attorney would not comment after the removal hearing.

Dozens of residents showed up to the meeting holding signs in support of Halderman. Thirteen people testified in support of the police chief to the board, as well as Halderman himself. No one testified against Halderman, according to McDaniels.

“It’s just unfortunate that this has been magnified and instead of the city asking how could help you, this is out of character… they instead want to cast him aside,” Sturgeon resident Erik Anthes said. “And that’s not the right answer.”

ABC 17 News has reported that Mayor Gene Kelley asked Halderman to resign or face the removal hearing, claiming he was unable to serve because of an alleged alcohol problem.

The mayor gave Halderman a 13-page document containing information about four incidents that occurred during his time as police chief. The most recent one involving Halderman allegedly harassing and verbally abusing three prisoners at the Boone County Jail after drinking alcohol in February.

This came after the police chief filed a complaint with the attorney general’s office against Alderman Tyler Patterson for reportedly copying a city personnel file.

The city’s attorney said officials would release the board’s decision Tuesday morning after notifying Halderman.
