Planting Season Just Weeks Away
April begins the time to start the vegetable garden with seeds indoors, for those who have a green thumb. During the first few weeks of April; Beets, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Kale, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Peppers, Spinach, and Tomato can be started. The last hard freeze typically occurs around April 10th, and in the past 4 years, this has been the case. During mid May sprouts should be transplanted to the ground, with Beets, Broccoli, Carrots, Kale, Lettuce, Peas, and Spinach harvested at the end of June before seeding again in July.
Hold off on seeding squash , corn and cucumber until mid to late April. Typically seeding usually begins in early May for corn, squash, and cucumber, while given this year’s mild winter and above normal ground temperatures for February and March, the ground should be mild enough for transplanting a few weeks earlier making for a more bountiful harvest for August this year.
